Vocational and Trade Education

Although the number of private institutions offering vocational education is steadily increasing, the main provider of vocational education in Australia is the TAFE (Technical and Further Education) system.

The TAFE system is comparable to the Polytechnics in Britain and the State Community Colleges in the US. In terms of the overall Australian education system TAFE is placed between senior secondary school and university, though there is some overlap between TAFE and university. The TAFE system is government-funded and has been in existence for over a 100 years. It is designed to provide Australian commerce and industry with skilled employees and offers practical training over a wide range of trades and para-professional occupations. In determining the nature of the training programs provided, TAFE institutions work closely with industry bodies and many TAFE teachers are also employed in the industry on which they give instruction.

In the pages that follow you will find information about many aspects of Vocational Education and Training in Australia that may be of interest to international students.
