TESOL Courses
AMES PREFERRED PROVIDERS

As the international demand for English language grows there is an on-going demand for teachers and there are many exciting job opportunities for well-qualified English teachers. The most widely recognised qualifications for English language teaching are the Cambridge Certificate (CELTA) and Diploma (DELTA) courses (formerly known as the Cambridge RSA CELTA/DELTA), administered by the University of Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate, and the Trinity courses, operated by Trinity College in London.

Both CELTA/DELTA and Trinity are standardized programs that regulate the selection of candidates, adhere to a standard curriculum, and ensure that trainees receive quality instruction and are graded objectively. The teacher trainers who conduct these courses have themselves undergone rigorous training and are required to have substantial, varied, and current teaching experience. Programs vary in the availability of full- or part-time options (ranging from 4 weeks to 3 months), placement services, and cost.

The courses are internationally recognised and will qualify and prepare you to teach English around the world. Within Australia the National ELICOS Accreditation Scheme (NEAS) recognises CELTA and DELTA as meeting the requirements for English language teachers.

An alternative to a CELTA or Trinity course is the Certificate IV in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) offered by a number of TAFE and independent education institutions in Australia.

The Certificate IV in TESOL is considered equivalent to the the CELTA and involves an introduction to techniques of classroom management and assessment and a thorough introduction to presentation techniques, lesson preparation and analysing language for communicative purposes. The course is very practical with a major emphasis on practice teaching, which is delivered through a combination of workshops, lesson observation and lesson delivery. The pre-requisite for entering the course is either the satisfactory completion of General English at Upper Intermediate level or an IELTS score of at least 5.0.
